School History

School History

Kaawaate East City Public School is the newest school not only in Peterborough, but throughout all of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.  Built on the side of a hill, this site is particularly unique and has an incredible view of East City and beyond.  Situated near the Peterborough lift locks and the Trent Severn Waterway, a portion of the school name, “Kaawaate” is Ojibwe for “shining waters”. This is very fitting not only in terms of the school’s location and the fact that throughout history water has always been a means of bringing people together, but even more importantly, this aspect of our school name supports us in reflecting on both the William’s Treaty and our role in supporting reconciliation. We honour the land our school resides on, as well as our relations with the First Nation community – past, present and in the future, and are proud of our school name and all that it represents.

As we open the doors to Kaawaate East City Public School in September 2021, our students come to us from both Armour Heights P.S. and King George P.S.  Over several years, students, staff and families have all worked hard to support this important amalgamation and transition as two schools become one!  Our new school logo, motto and mascot have come to life through the hard work of a Vision Committee, and we are grateful for the meaning behind each of these! Please click here to learn more each of these important aspects of our school!

Special thank you to Moffatt and Duncan, the architect firm who took the ideas from all stakeholders to help make every space a learning space in our new school, Everstrong Construction who has diligently and successfully built this incredible school on a beautiful yet challenging site, and to all members of Armour Heights P.S., King George Public School and the KPRDSB for everyone’s support, patience and enthusiasm as we bring life to this unique and innovative school.  We are so proud to ground ourselves in the various aspects of our initial vision that is now a reality, and we are truly honoured and grateful to be part of Kaawaate East City Public School!
